*No More Business As Usual: Mutfwang Sets Up Powerful Committee to Grill MDAs Over ₦1bn Budgets - Budget Commissioner
By Onjefu Odaudu, Jos, Plateau State
The Plateau State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Ishaku Maren, has described Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang as a leader who is "obsessed with results, not noise."
Speaking in an exclusive chat with select journalists in his office on Thursday, September 8, 2026, at the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat, Jos, shortly after chairing the final 2027 budget defence session, Maren said the governor has redefined budgeting in the state.
> "Governor Mutfwang is a people-focused governor. He is after quality governance and not propaganda. He wants every kobo to work for the Plateau people," Maren declared.
The Commissioner revealed that Governor Mutfwang personally constituted a high-powered scrutiny committee to vet any MDA whose 2027 proposal exceeded ₦1 billion.
> "The governor in his wisdom said we must look beyond figures. We must interrogate every proposal. Is it people-driven? Is it realistic? Can Plateau people feel it?" he explained.
According to him, the committee comprised himself as Chairman, alongside the Secretary to the Government of the State, the Chief of Staff, the Attorney-General, the Accountant-General, the Commissioner for Finance and the Special Adviser on Budget.
On new policy directions, Maren hinted at bold moves:
> "You will see new Ministries like Humanitarian Affairs taking center stage, and we have made clear provisions for the anticipated State Police. This is a forward-looking budget. The governor is preparing Plateau for the future, not just for 2027."
He assured citizens that the 2027 budget will be "a budget of consolidation and impact" with zero tolerance for waste.
